Car Black Box (CarBB) Solutions from Texas Instruments

Car Black Box (CarBB) is a car digital video recorder device that allows monitoring and recording of activities inside or outside an automobile. This new low power aftermarket technology can be used as a personal automobile surveillance system. Texas Instruments has customized solutions for this product segment.

Car Black Box can provide a panoramic style monitoring with its front, rear and optional side cameras. A high quality recording is achieved with the integration of high megapixel image sensors, TI’s DSP image processing and compression engines. The resulting H.264, MJPEG or MPEG4 videos can be stored on a local SD/Hard Disk storage to view on a local screen or can even be streamed onto a remote viewing unit through WiFi/3G/4G connections.

CarBB provides various solutions to meet particular needs. For instance, many types of modules including analog cameras and image sensors (parallel, CSI2, MIPI over LVDS) can be connected to the TI CarBB in any configurations from one to four channels. For bigger automobiles, the channel density can reach 8 or more channels. The scalability offered by TI’s DSPs allows monitoring for different size vehicles.

Primarily as aftermarket equipment, the CarBB provides a small form factor, low power with high heat dissipation solution that allows for a personal automobiles surveillance system that is functioning regardless if the car is on or off.
